The Coming

The Word made flesh, small enough to hold — a yes, a road, a closed door, a child in a carpenter’s shop.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger.

Luke 2:7

The story does not begin on a throne. It begins in a room at dusk, with a young woman who has already said yes, and a child who is the lamp. Luke’s account meets John’s witness: the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Philippians sings of the One who took upon him the form of a servant. The humility of God is not an idea. It is a weight in a mother’s arms.

Micah named Bethlehem long before the night arrived — a real place, a real child, a real promise fulfilled. Shepherds on a dark slope. A road south when the child was still new. Magi with gifts that already smell of burial. Painters who love this moment refuse the pageant. They keep the scale of a lap, a doorway, a hillside that has begun to glow.

This wall is that beginning: the room, the hill, the gifts, the road. Warm light. A human face. The hope already quiet, and already enough.
